About Dark Squares
Book Description
Educated meets The Queen’s Gambit in this extraordinary memoir by International Master and Chess.com co-founder Danny Rensch, who tells the story of how chess saved his life.
Born into the Church of Immortal Consciousness, Danny grew up inside an abusive cult marked by manipulation, neglect, and control. Chess became his escape, offering hope and purpose when little else could. Mentored by a troubled Russian master, he rose through the ranks, only to face a medical crisis that nearly ended his career.
From discovering the game in 1995 to becoming the face of Chess.com and navigating the largest cheating scandal in chess history, Rensch shares a haunting and deeply human story of trauma, resilience, and survival. Dark Squares is a testament to the healing power of the game that gave him freedom.

Great men overcome great obstacles – and I haven’t been this inspired by an underdog story in a long time. Taken from his mother, raised in a cult, Danny rose to the very pinnacle of the chess world – and then the business world. A must read.
Ben Mezrich
